Fishing Dilemma: Choose Time or Weather for Your Fishing Trip? My Cold Wind Adventure

Fishing Dilemma: Choose Time or Weather for Your Fishing Trip? My Cold Wind Adventure Fishing Dilemma: Choose Time or Weather for Your Fishing Trip? My Cold Wind Adventure

The Night Before: Excitement vs. Dread

Let me set the scene: I’d been counting down the days to this fishing trip. Work had been chaotic, and my last chance to cast a line was weeks ago. So when I finally booked the day off, I was over the moon-until I woke up.

First, the temperature hit me like a brick. I’d left my window cracked, and the cold air seeping in made me yank the covers over my head. Then, I heard it: the wind. Not a gentle breeze, but a howling gale that made the trees outside sound like they were screaming. My fishing instincts kicked in immediately: “This weather is garbage for fishing.”

But here’s the thing-I’d already taken the day off. If I bailed now, the next free slot was 15 whole days away. 15 days! That’s an eternity for a guy who thinks about fishing during meetings. So I did what any desperate angler would do: I made up a dumb excuse to justify going. “I’ll test how to fish in cold, windy weather!” Yeah, right. I just needed a way to save face.

Setting Up Camp in the Freezing Wind

By the time I reached the spot, my hands were already numb. I dragged my gear out of the car and started setting up my “battle station” (fancy term for a folding chair and a rod holder). First, I tossed my main rod into the water to check the vibe. Maybe the fish were feeling rebellious today?

Let me tell you about that wind. It wasn’t just cold-it was sharp. Like tiny invisible knives stabbing my face and hands. I’ve fished in wind before, but this was different. The temperature drop turned a mild breeze into a torture device. After 10 minutes, I ran back to the car for an extra jacket. No shame here-I wasn’t trying to win a “tough guy” award.

I layered up, but the wind still found its way in. Every time I adjusted my line, I felt a shiver run down my spine. Why did I do this again?

One Hour Later: Nada. Zilch. Nothing.

An hour and a half passed. Not a single bite. I stared at my rod tip, waiting for even a tiny twitch. Nothing. I turned around and looked at the shrimp ponds behind me-they looked calm, but the wind was still howling. I sighed so loud, the seagulls flew away. What a waste of a day.

To kill time, I scooped some seawater to wash my hands. Wait a second-the water was warm! Like, surprisingly warm. I joked to myself that jumping in would be cozier than standing on the shore. The surface was cold, but the water below? Toasty. That’s a problem for fish, right? Big temperature differences mess with their feeding habits. No wonder they were hiding.

Desperation Move: Add Another Rod

Bored out of my mind, I decided to set up a second rod. Why not? Maybe the fish were hanging out farther away, or closer to shore. Two rods would cover more ground. At this point, I was just trying to look busy.

More time passed. Still nothing. I checked my phone-no new messages, no updates on the “how to catch fish in hellish weather” forum. I was stuck.

The “Meh” Catch and the Surprise Double

Finally, something happened! My rod tip twitched, and I yanked it up. I caught a fish! But wait… it was a species no local angler likes. It’s tiny, bony, and basically useless. I stared at it for a second, then tossed it back. Thanks for nothing, buddy.

I went back to moping. I started second-guessing everything: Why didn’t I check the weather app again? Why did I skip the extra coffee? Most importantly-was I the kind of angler who chooses time over weather?

Then, around 3 PM, magic happened. My long rod’s line went completely under the water (a “black drift,” as we call it). I jumped up, grabbed the rod, and reeled as hard as I could. And guess what? I pulled up two fish at once! Double trouble!

They were grouper (we call them “spot pig brothers” locally). These guys are expensive-like $50 a pound expensive. But here’s the catch: I only had two. Was it worth getting my fish bag wet for two small ones? Nah. Cleaning a fish bag for two fish is a pain. So I put them in a bucket to keep them fresh, then later let them go. Sorry, dinner-maybe next time.

The Sky Turns Pretty (and a Warning Sign)

By 5 PM, the sky did a 180. It turned this stunning mix of orange and pink-like a painting. I pulled out my phone and took a photo. But wait… I know that sky. In this season, a pretty sunset like that means one thing: more bad weather is coming.

I checked the forecast. Yup. Tomorrow’s temperature would drop 6-10 degrees. Great. My patience was gone. I packed up my gear, said goodbye to the spot, and started the drive home.

So… Time or Weather? Let’s Talk

On the way back, I thought a lot about the dilemma. For me, the answer is clear-most days, I choose time. Life’s too busy to wait for perfect weather. But this trip taught me a lesson: sometimes, the weather wins. If it’s typhoon-level bad, I’ll stay home. But a little cold wind? I’ll tough it out (with extra layers).

But what about you? Are you the type who checks the weather app 10 times before deciding? Or do you grab your gear whenever you have a free minute, no matter what? Drop a comment below-I’m curious to see which team you’re on!

And hey, even though I didn’t bring home dinner, I got a story out of it. That’s half the fun of fishing, right? The adventure, the dumb mistakes, and the tiny wins that make it all worth it.
