When Fishing Feels Like a Metaphor for Life’s Ups and Downs

I sat down to write about fishing, but let’s be real-this is secretly a story about life. Specifically, that gut-wrenching feeling when you’re stuck in what feels like the deepest, darkest valley of your existence. Lately, I’ve been drowning in “life rock bottom” vibes, so let’s spill all the weird, frustrating, nothing-goes-right moments that led me here.

The String of Unfortunate Events That Started It All

It all kicked off with my electric bike-my trusty commuter. I was just a few minutes from home, turning a corner, when I felt that dreaded “thump” from the rear tire. I pushed it to a repair shop, and guess what? A 10+ cm curved nail had completely punctured the tire, right through. No patching it-had to drop cash on a brand-new one. Ugh.

Two days later, I rode to RT-Mart in Nanxiang. The sky was clear when I left, but halfway through my shopping, I heard the rain pouring outside. I waited until 5 PM, thinking it’d lighten up. Put on my raincoat, hopped on the bike, and hit the road-only to find the streets flooded. I thought, “Eh, I can power through this shallow water…” Spoiler: It wasn’t shallow. My bike died mid-flood, total power loss. I left it by the roadside and came back the next day. The repair shop said the controller and alarm were fried. Another big bill.

Night Fishing Gone Wrong (So, So Wrong)

Then came the night fishing disaster. I headed to my spot, but the area was terrible for snags. Lost a few rigs, but I’d already baited the spot and there were bites, so I kept going. Next cast? Snagged again. I pulled hard… and my main line snapped-right near the rod tip. I watched my glow float bobbing in the water, still lit up. I had to get it back, so I grabbed my favorite 5.4m “Wufang Yiben Ji” rod to reach it. But in my rush? I broke the first two sections of the rod tip when extending it. My heart hurt- that rod was one of my favorites.

I refused to quit, though. Got my glow float back, kept fishing. The bites were insane-tons of small crucian carp. I caught and released them, and a little yellow cat showed up, so I fed it a dozen or so. But not a single big crucian (aka “ban ji”) in sight. Annoying, but whatever-at least the cat was happy.

Oh, and if you think those small mishaps are “rock bottom”? Wait till you hear the big one: I lost years of savings to a failed investment. My hard-earned salary-gone. That’s the kind of stress that makes your chest feel tight, like you can’t breathe. The only tiny silver lining? I checked off a major goal I set at the start of the year. It’s not much, but it kept me from completely collapsing.

When Fishing Goes from “Escape” to “Another Disaster” (But Wait-Fish!)

Yesterday, my workplace had a power outage. I made breakfast, ate, and thought: Finally, a free day to fish! I left in a hurry, forgetting water and snacks-but who cares? For a fisherman, being by the river is the ultimate joy. I got to my usual spot, no one was there (score!), and set up my gear fast.

Setting up gear at the quiet fishing spot

I baited the area, but no bites at first. Then my float started bobbing-suddenly, a sharp dip! I lifted the rod, and it felt heavy. What pulled up? A huge crab-at least 100g. Okay, that was a fun surprise.

Still no fish bites, so I did what every responsible angler should: picked up trash. Filled a big bag with empty bottles and snack wrappers. Pro tip: Always take your trash with you, and if you can, pick up a little extra. Let’s keep our fishing spots clean for everyone!

The “Peak” Moment That Turned Into Another Crisis

Back to fishing. The float bobbed again-this time, a big dip. I lifted the rod, and the fish fought hard! I was using my “Wufang Yiben 3rd Gen” 4.5m rod-28-action, but with the flexibility of a 37-action, super gentle on lines. My 1.2 main line + 0.8 leader could handle a 1.5kg fish easy. After three minutes of reeling, I landed a beautiful carp. Yes!

Next bite? A big crucian carp-exactly what I’d been chasing. I scooped it with my net, but it jumped out. I panicked and reached for it… and knocked my fishing chair into the river. The chair was soaked, and I had to re-mix my bait. But wait, it gets worse: I sat on the wet chair (using my umbrella bag as a cushion) and picked up my rod-only to see the handle section was cracked. I must’ve stepped on it in my rush to catch the fish. That rod was 10 years old, my favorite. I almost cried.

Carp, crucian carp, topmouth culter, and crab catches laid out

But here’s the thing: Even with the cracked rod, I kept going. And right before I left? Another bite-a nice-sized topmouth culter. So by the end of the day, I’d caught four species: carp, big crucian, topmouth culter, and that crab. All in one trip!

So… Peak or Rock Bottom?

Let’s recap: I lost money on investments, broke two favorite rods, fried my bike’s electronics, ruined a tire, and knocked my chair into the river. But I also caught four different species in one day, fed a stray cat, and cleaned up my fishing spot. Is this life’s peak? No. Is it rock bottom? Maybe-but not the end.

Fishing’s always been my escape when life feels too heavy. Even when everything goes wrong mid-trip, that moment when you feel a fish tug on the line? It’s magic. It reminds me that even in the messiest days, there’s a little joy to grab onto.

Hey, if any fellow anglers have a spare handle section for the Wufang Yiben 3rd Gen 4.5m rod lying around, hit me up-I’d be so grateful. And to everyone reading: Next time life throws you a curveball (or a cracked rod, or a flooded bike), take a breath. Maybe go fishing. You never know-you might catch a crab, a carp, and a little hope along the way.
