Why Did I Strike Out at This Perfect Fishing Spot? A Beginner’s Frustrating Tale

Why Did I Strike Out at This Perfect Fishing Spot? A Beginner’s Frustrating Tale

Let me set the scene: I’m a total fishing newbie who got hooked (pun absolutely intended) on traditional fishing last November. I was traveling for work in Shandong, China, and stumbled into this old-school angling style—long rods, short lines, the whole shebang. Back then, I had one day off a week, and with COVID still keeping crowds at bay, I’d wander local parks. That’s where I found a lotus pond packed with traditional anglers. A few stubborn souls stuck to their fancy tackle, but their catch? Nothing compared to the traditional guys. So I did what any impulsive newbie would do: I hit Amazon (well, the Chinese equivalent) and bought a rod. Game on.

My first trip? Absolute magic. Me and two coworkers, all novices, used wine-infused rice for chum and earthworms for bait. In one day? Sixty-plus fish. Some were even seven or eight ounces—decent-sized crucian carp, if you’re curious. We were hooked (again, pun intended) and bragging for weeks. I thought I’d cracked this fishing thing. Spoiler: I hadn’t.

Fast Forward to My “Surefire” Fishing Spot

Fast forward a few months. I’m back in Zhejiang, and COVID restrictions have lifted—sort of. My girlfriend’s family? They all got hit hard by the virus. Fever, “blade throat,” “cement nose” (you know the drill). She was terrified of passing it to me (lucky me, I’ve never caught it), so we kept our distance. Saturdays and Sundays felt empty. Then I remembered that Shandong magic. “I’ll go fishing!” I thought. “Catch some fish for her family—show off my new skills, help them out. Win-win.”

So I hopped in the car and drove to a spot I’d heard about: a river bend near Houdong Apartment. And man—this place was perfect. Let me list the perks:

  • Easy access: Right off the main road.
  • Free parking: No fighting for spots or paying fees.
  • Scenery: Calm water, trees lining the bank—total relaxation.

I was already planning my victory lap. “This is gonna be better than Shandong,” I thought. Oh, how wrong I was.

The “Surefire” Plan That Flopped

I stuck to what I knew—my Shandong playbook. Here’s what I did:

Step 1: Chum Like a Pro (Or So I Thought)

I grabbed my wine-infused rice chum and scattered seven different spots. Seven! I figured more spots = more bites. What could go wrong?

Step 2: Rig Up (Again, What I Knew)

I grabbed my 7.2-meter rod, tied on a 1.0-sized seven-star float (traditional style), and baited with a juicy earthworm. The water was about 3 meters deep—perfect for the fish I’d caught before. I was ready.

Step 3: The Torture of Waiting

I started at the leftmost spot, cast out, and waited. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. I moved to the next. Nothing. Then the third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh. Back to the first. Back to the second. I did this loop for two hours. Two whole hours. My float? It might as well have been glued to the water. No twitch, no dip, no anything.

By the end, I was freezing (even though it was spring, the wind was brutal), my hands were sore, and I was this close to tossing my rod into the river. I packed up, drove home, and stared at my empty bucket. How? I thought. This spot was perfect. I did everything right.

What I Learned (And What I’m Begging for Help With)

Let’s be real: I’m a total newbie. That Shandong trip was a fluke, and I know it. But this stung. So I’m putting out a call:

To all the fishing veterans near Paojiang and Lihai—please, please help a newbie out. Whether you’re willing to take me under your wing for a day, or just point me to a spot that actually has fish, I’d be forever grateful. I’m not asking for your secret honey holes—just a little guidance.

And hey, if you’re a fellow newbie who’s had the same “perfect spot, zero catch” disaster? Drop a comment below. Let’s commiserate. Maybe we can figure this out together.

For now, I’m gonna go back to that river bend. Maybe next time, the fish will be in a better mood. Or maybe I’ll finally learn what I’m doing wrong. Either way—stay tuned. And if you see a guy with a too-long rod, looking confused? That’s me. Wave.
