Yunliao River Fishing Spot: A Free, Scenic Fishing Destination in Xuzhou

Introduction: A Hidden Gem for Anglers in Xuzhou

During my recent trip to Xuzhou, I was on the hunt for a peaceful fishing spot that offered more than just a chance to catch fish. What I found was Yunliao River – a free, idyllic fishing haven nestled in the heart of Tongshan District. From the moment I arrived, the clear water, friendly anglers, and serene surroundings made it instantly feel like my new go-to spot for a relaxing day outdoors. Whether you’re a seasoned angler or just looking to unwind, this place has something for everyone.

Location & Getting There: Easy Access in Fangcun Town

Yunliao River Fishing Spot is located in Fangcun Town, Tongshan District, Xuzhou, specifically near the Xiaowan North area along the old course of the Yunliao River. The location is surprisingly convenient, even for those without a private car. If you’re driving, take the main road through Fangcun Town and follow the signs to the riverbank – parking is available along the roadside without any fees. Public transportation is also an option: local buses servicing Fangcun Town stop nearby, with a short 10-minute walk to the fishing area. Its proximity to Xuzhou’s urban center makes it a quick escape from the city bustle.

Fishing Conditions: Clear Water, Bountiful Fish

The highlight of Yunliao River is undoubtedly its pristine water quality. The old river course retains a natural, clean flow, resulting in crystal-clear water that lets you see fish swimming beneath the surface. This clarity adds an extra thrill to casting your line – you can almost anticipate where the next bite will come from! The depth averages around 2 meters, which is ideal for both shore fishing and gentle boat use (though boats aren’t provided, the wide, flat riverbank offers ample space for comfortable positioning).

When it comes to fish, locals aren’t exaggerating: there’s an impressive abundance and size. I spent a morning fishing and caught several crucian carp and common carp, with the largest one tipping the scales at over 1.5 kg. Other anglers I spoke to mentioned even bigger catches, thanks to the river’s rich ecosystem. The fish are active year-round, though spring and summer typically see the highest activity as they feed aggressively.

Atmosphere: A Serene Leisure Spot

Beyond fishing, Yunliao River offers a picturesque setting perfect for relaxation. The riverbank is lined with lush trees, providing shade and cool breezes on sunny days. Open fields stretch out in the distance, creating a peaceful backdrop that contrasts beautifully with the gentle sound of flowing water. Families often bring picnic baskets or set up small tents, making it a popular weekend destination. Unlike crowded urban spots, this area feels spacious and quiet, allowing you to focus on nature without distractions.

The free entry policy is another major draw – no hidden costs, just pure enjoyment. Whether you’re there to fish competitively or simply unwind, Yunliao River delivers a balance of adventure and tranquility.

Quick Tips for First-Time Visitors

  • Best Times to Visit: Early mornings (6–9 AM) or late afternoons (4–6 PM) are prime for catching fish, as water temperature and activity levels peak then.
  • Essential Gear: Lightweight rods and natural bait (corn, earthworms) work best here due to the clear water. A basic tackle box with hooks and floats is sufficient for beginners.
  • Weather Prep: While shaded, summer sun can be intense; bring sunscreen, a hat, and a portable fan for comfort.
  • Eco-Friendly Practices: Always clean up your trash and consider releasing smaller fish to maintain the river’s ecosystem.

Yunliao River isn’t just a fishing spot – it’s a slice of nature that’s easy to access and full of surprises. From the big, eager fish to the tranquil surroundings, it’s the kind of place that makes you want to return again and again. Whether you’re a local angler or a tourist exploring Xuzhou, this free destination is a must-visit. I’ll definitely be back soon, and I hope you’ll add it to your list of favorite spots too!
